Presqu'ile

Presqu'ile is on the north shore of Lake Ontario, near the town of Brighton.
The name of the park is the French word for peninsula, or literally "almost island". The park area was formed when a limestone island was connected to the mainland by a sand spit; this kind of formation is referred to as a tombolo. Presqu'ile is known for its migrating birds and Monarch butterflies. We have also spotted White Tailed Deer!

We have been visiting Presqu'ile Provincial Park for over 4 yrs now. Our kids have always loved the activities they offer in the evening (ie: a Treasure hunt, a presentation on 'What to do if you encounter shore of Lake Ontar a bear') or weekend activities, (BBQ by friends of Presqu'ile). Within the park there is the Visitor's Center as well as Lighthouse Interpretive Centre, and the Nature Centre.
Presqu'ile has an interesting history as it was once a very popular spot for vacationers from Canada as well as the US. In the early 1900s, a lot of hotels opened up across from the harbour. The grandmother of a  friend of ours lives in what was once small hotel which is really cool. The ground floo1960's looking first floor but the staircase takes you to the second floor which has original has an enclosed porch which is also the dining area. When you open the front door, its as if nothing much has changed since being converted from a hotel to a home. The stairs lead up to the second floor landing which is encased by a wooden railing spanning the width of the entire 'hotel/house'. A row of doors (which were the original hotel rooms), spanning the upstairs floor can be seen from the entrance.
