Ode to Oastler Lake

One of our all time fav's ..... went to Oastler Lake Provincial Park last w/e with a reservation for a premium walk in site. Oooh La La What a view!

Oastler is one of the most beautiful parks in my opinion- a perfect mixture shade and sun, tall old pine trees, rocky outlooks, sand beaches and the ole railroad tracks. If you're going to camp there- get a walk in site with a view of the gorgeous lake. One of the main attractions is the store just outside the campgrounds which makes the best home made pies for a mere $6.99 (available in apple, Blueberry, Cherry, Bumbleberry). These pies are worth the trip alone! We had pie every morning we were there for breakfast (heated on the fire). Scrumptious.
There are always warnings of 'recent bear sightings' when we have gone but we have yet to encounter one. There are strict rules about putting your food/ cooler away in car at night (and the park police do come around and check). This can be awkward when you have a walk in site. We saw a couple with a big green plastic wagon made by Rubbermaid. They said the got it from their son who used to deliver fliers. It was sturdy; able to haul their cooler up and down a steep slope to the parking lot and back. Smart.
The only drawback about the lake is that there were too many noisy motorized water sports. One is too many in my opinion. The trains are frequent and long (miles!) but the noise does not bother us- it seems to work with the scenery whereas the water skiing often comes along with a rowdy "YEEE HAWWW"
Forgot to mention- canoe rental. We rented a canoe for a few hours last year and canoed across the lake to a nice little restaurant with a patio looking onto the lake. Nice and pretty good eatins. If you rent for 4 hrs, it gives you just enough time for lunch. Seems this year things have changed; on top of the cost of canoe rental, they require a $500 deposit to rent a canoe. Needless to say-we did not rent one this year.

Michelle- Just read your comment- prob already booked (sorry)but I believe it was #203
I would recommend any walk in site though (The Point = sites #200-#209)
We were right on the water ( all of the walk in sites are)... Bring a wagon if you happen to have one; makes walking in your stuff SO much easier, not great privacy but just put tent up in strategic position and look out at the water! 'Walk in sites/ The Point) are the best.
If you cant get one- anything as close to the water as possible or premium ( lakeside or bigger, more private sites).
I'm probably too late- attain, I apologize!

We frequently visit Ostler Lake as well. We think it's one of the few descent parks not very far from the GTA.
We've never tried camping in walk-ins though, it does look like it's more beautiful and peaceful there.

hikecampandtravel, 'The Point' is a must if you like Oastler. It is 'walk in' but the parking lot (small) is tight at the top of a slope that you have to walk down which is really all there is in terms of 'walking in'
We are not set up for anything but car camping so is we can do it (with kids in past), anyone can.
I have seen a smart couple bring one of those kid's wagons (that they can sit in). They haled stuff up and down the slope using that which can carry a fair amount. We just had a fold up basket and made a trip up and down the slope for every meal. Not that big a deal.
Regarless, Its worth trying to get a spot at 'The Point' if you're going to Oastler. The best spots are at the end of the point... which is why they are usually taken ; )

hello everyone. i booked a spot at "The Point". I was wondering what the washroom situation is like. Is the closest washroom a flushable one? or a hole in the ground?
