Wildlife: Frogs, Loons, White tailed Deer (6), Bear, Snake
One early morning , we saw multiple animal tracks in the sand; bear, deer, raccoons, snakes ( or snails). Unfortunately my phone/camera was dead.
Ok we didn't actually see a bear but we definitely heard one in the middle of the night - it was something BIG and in the distance... A low, deep growl. Apparently Killbear has bears wandering in and out of campsite areas constantly. 'Campsite bears' have become used to humans and their food due to people who do not adhere to the 'bare campsite rules'. If the bears become a nuisance, they are put down.
One night, we awoke to the sound of another bear ....then in between growls came a "SHUT UP DADDY!"
That one turned out to be a human with severe sleep apnea.
Killbear Provincial Park has been on our list for quite some time. When a waterfront site in opened up in Harold Point, we booked it without hesitation.
Killbear is one of the bigger ( 7 camp sites) and more popular parks in Ontario.
A nice combination of rocky shores and several sandy beaches with shallow water, Killbear also boasts a large modernized ' Nature Centre' which was the best one I have seen so far.
( nice bathroom sinks!). Walking and bike trails galore.
Our site was considered a ' premium' site that costs a bit more because it is 'adjacent to water'
This site was 'adjacent to road' ( which was adjacent to beach).
The sites were too close to each other ( much like Craigleith). Our neighbours to the east were a couple of women, one had a daughter, "Cassie" and a dog named "Radar"
The site to the NE of ours was a couple with a yappie little dog.
They shouted across to each other,
"I smell something. Do you smell it?"
" Yeah I smell too"
"I think it's dog pooh"
"Yeah definitely"
------------
"Whatcha cook'in?"
"Hot dogs"
"Hotdogs? Why don't ya cook me over here. We have our stove set up"
And on and on and on it went.
We spent most time AWAY from our premium camp site.
I'm all for camping with another family and/or friends but they should have a separate section like the RV campers. Maybe they could have a 'people with babies' section too.
Just kidding!
Next time I'm thinking... out back camping where you can't here or see another human for miles unless you canoe.
Time to portage.
